The physicians at ABC Pediatrics are Board Certified* through the American Board of Pediatrics. Being a board certified pediatrician represents dedication to the highest level of professionalism and promotes excellence in patient care.
Sandra L. Staublin, M.D.
A native of Illinois (Chicago area), Dr. Staublin attended Eastern Illinois University, Michigan State Medical School, and performed her post-graduate training at Butterworth Hospital. As a board certified pediatrician, Dr. Staublin has an abiding interest in sports (okay, she’s a self-admitted sports nut!), and her love and passion for athletics underlies her extensive medical experience in treating athletes. Dr. Staublin and her family currently live in the Rockford area. In her free time, Dr. Staublin enjoys gardening and caring for the animals on her hobby farm.
Jeffrey B. Hoogstra, M.D.
Dr. Hoogstra was born and raised in New Jersey. After attending Calvin College in Grand Rapids, he returned to New Jersey to continue his training at New Jersey Medical School then moved to Connecticut to attend Yale New Haven Hospital where he completed his post-graduate training. As a board certified pediatrician, he held a private practice for 15 years in Connecticut before moving back to MI in 1999 to join ABC Pediatrics. Dr. Hoogstra and his wife Shirley have two wonderful children and three grandchildren and live in the Grand Rapids area. He is actively involved in his church, prison ministries and enjoys traveling and scuba diving.
Belinda Chou, M.D.
Dr. Chou attended the University of Michigan where she completed her undergraduate, medical school and post-graduate training in pediatrics. As a board certified pediatrician, Dr. Chou worked in various settings including a pediatric emergency room and a general pediatric practice. She was also involved in clinical research related to high risk pregnancies before moving back to Michigan in 2002. Dr. Chou and her family enjoy traveling and spending time up north.
Jennifer Perry, M.D.
After growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Dr. Jennifer Perry attended Michigan State University for undergraduate studies and medical school prior to residency at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital here in Grand Rapids. She joined ABC Pediatrics in 2010 and loves to call West Michigan her home. As a board certified pediatrician, Dr. Perry has an interest in teaching and educating families about their child’s health and what to expect as children grow. She also has a passion for international medicine and spends time traveling to Haiti, helping to run a school-based primary health care clinic. Dr. Perry and her husband enjoy boating, traveling and spending time with their daughters.
Derrick Holeman, M.D.
Dr. Derrick Holeman grew up in Hammond, Indiana and went on to attend Indiana University for both his undergraduate and medical school education. He moved to Grand Rapids to complete his residency training in Pediatrics at the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. Dr. Holeman enjoys caring for children born prematurely after their discharge from the NICU, as well as adolescents. He and his fiancé live in downtown Grand Rapids, and enjoy cycling and reading.
Derrick Holeman, M.D.
Dr. Derrick Holeman grew up in Hammond, Indiana and went on to attend Indiana University for both his undergraduate and medical school education. He moved to Grand Rapids to complete his residency training in Pediatrics at the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. As a board certified pediatrician, Dr. Holeman enjoys caring for children born prematurely after their discharge from the NICU as well as children with complex medical problems. He and his wife live on the west side of Grand Rapids, and when not spoiling their fury pets, he enjoys ceramics and reading.
Tracie Medrano-Smith, D.O.
Dr. Medrano grew up in DeWitt, Michigan and went on to attend Michigan State University for both her undergraduate and medical school training. She moved to Grand Rapids to complete her pediatric residency training at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. Dr. Medrano has enjoyed gaining the parent perspective of pediatrics with her three young children. Her pediatric interests include preventive medicine, newborn care and adolescent medicine.
In her free time, Dr. Medrano enjoys traveling, sporting events and outdoor activities.
Shannon Leikert, D.O.
Originally from Brighton, MI, Dr. Shannon Leikert graduated from Michigan State University for both her undergraduate and medical school degrees. She completed her pediatric residency training at the Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit and then stayed an additional year as a chief resident. As a board certified pediatrician, Dr. Leikert enjoys caring for children of all ages with a special interest in newborn and maternal health, pediatric mental health, and adolescent medicine. She also has additional training in breastfeeding as a certified lactation counselor. Dr. Leikert hopes to partner with families to promote healthy lifestyles and help children thrive physically and emotionally.
Dr Leikert is married and has a young son. She enjoys cooking, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
Marielle VanderVennen, M.D.
A West Michigan native, Dr. VanderVennen attended Calvin College for her undergraduate studies and Michigan State University for medical school. She completed her residency training in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.
Dr. VanderVennen has worked as a pediatric and neonatal hospitalist, caring for children admitted to the hospital as well as newborns in the delivery room. As a board certified pediatrician, she has a passion for newborn medicine and optimizing child wellbeing across the continuum of infancy to adolescence. She is dedicated to quality improvement and relationship-centric care.
Dr. VanderVennen lives in the countryside with her 3 young children and husband. She enjoys local food, good music, sporting events and planning her next adventure traveling. You can also find her reading or journaling on her back porch.
